6. Does 13RW raise awareness for mental health

6. Are  Books like 13RW a good way to raise awareness for mental health and for bullying? Welcome back, today's post will be about the statement:  Books like 13RW are a good way to raise awareness for mental health and for bullying. We will discuss this statement and decide whether it's correct or not. First of all, it's a fact, that the book shows what can happen when especially young people are bullied or worse. We know from experiences at our school, that words can hurt and that they can make the bullied person depressive. "13 Reasons Why" isn't a fantasy story, it deals with real-life problems and the consequences that so few people talk about. On the other hand, the book doesn't give any advice to a person with these problems, it just shows the problems. It raises awareness for the topic and the society might learn from it but the individual with the problems mentioned before won't find help through it which can cause more problems as we'll se...

5. Diary Entry

5. Diary Entry Hey, today I´m going to discuss, which elements of the book I enjoyed and which parts are different from what I expected. First of all, I'd like to talk about the perspective. It leads you through the story with a perfect balance between Clay's realtime experience and Hannah, who tells her story from the tapes. Secondly, there are the characters, almost all of them are evolving in their own way throughout Hannah's and even Clay's story. Everyone can tell his own story and has an actual background, that can explain their action in the book. Furthermore, I must confess, that this is really the only book without many action elements, that I really liked and enjoyed. But there is also a thing, I'd consider improvable and that's the role of the school itself. Of course, we have Mr. Porter, who represents the school's actions against bullying, but I think it would be nice to have a closer look at how the school handled bullying before, or even loo...

4. Why does Clay receive the tapes?

4. Why does Clay receive the tapes? Hey guys, today I´m back with another great topic, the question, why does Clay receive the tapes?? We´re going to use a quote from the book to answer the question: p.163 II. 21-29 “Clay, honey, your name does not belong on this list. […] You don’t belong in the same way as the others. It’s like that song: ‘One of these things is not like the others. One of these things just doesn’t belong.’ And that’s you, Clay. But you need to be here if I’m going to tell my story. To tell it more completely." First of all, we already discussed in a previous post, that Clay has a special role among the thirteen people receiving the tapes. She says that Clay doesn´t belong in the same way as the others, which tells us that his influence on her death wasn´t necessarily negative. On the other hand, he´s a very important part of the story because he´s necessary for the story "to tell it more completely" . Maybe Clay is the one person, that Hannah w...

3. Characterisation

3. Characterisation of Clay Jensen Hello and welcome back guys, today I´m going to tell you about Clay Jensen. He´s a main character in 13 Reasons why and therefore very important for the story, so you´d better listen closely. (Most of the information about his appearance is from the series, because the book doesn´t provide enough to properly characterize him!) First of all, some general information about Clay Jensen. He is a 16 years old boy and lives in Crestmont, California. Currently, he´s attending the "Liberty High School" and also working at a theater named after his hometown "The Crestmont" . Generally, he´s a handsome and tall boy, with blue eyes and brown hair. It´s very difficult to characterize Clay because his character traits or feelings aren´t really explained by the book, so we have to build our own picture, using his action and reactions to Hannah´s tapes. This is called an indirect characterisation. In my opinion, he´s a  good-natured, ho...

2. Theme

2. Themes Hey, today we're going to discuss a major theme in 13 Reasons Why . A theme is an idea in a fictional literary work, for example, "the contrast between love and hate " in Romeo and Juliet. It's important, that topics are something entirely different from themes, topics describe a general subject, that is treated by a book or a text. The theme we're going to discuss is death.  This theme is very relevant in the book because it's Hannah's death that changes the lives of so many characters in the book, in fact, it's the theme that makes 13 Reasons Why so emotional and sad. Of course, there are other very important themes in the book, like friendship or identity, but none of them is as frightening and terrible as the death of a young girl who was full of excitement about her life. Everything in the book, that's told by Hannah leads to her death or suicide and it's Clay, who wants to find out why. In addition to this, death always c...

1. Perspective

1. Perspective Hey guys and welcome to my first post about how "13 Reasons Why" is narrated and which perspectives are used to tell the story. Which perspective is used? If you read 13 reasons Why you quickly recognize, that Clay narrates the story from his perspective. You can see this, because words like "I"  or "we" are used outside of "quotation marks". But there is a second narrator, Hannah Baker, who talks in first-perspective too. She is the voice recorded on the tapes and tells a part of the story. So Clay doesn't describe what he hears, Hannah speaks for herself without question marks and it feels like we're sitting right next to Clay hearing the recording and telling us what he experiences, whereas Hannah tells her Story. Why did the author use this method? A huge part of the story are Hannah's feelings and her suffering, this can only be expressed powerful, if Hannah tells the story herself, without distracti...

Welcome

Welcome to my new blog Hello and welcome to my new blog. Here, I'm going to share my thoughts about 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher, it's a book that's different from everything that I've ever read before. A book that talks about everything: friendship, identity, death, suicide and a book that tries to explain what it means to be abused and bullied. It going to be tough but I hope you can learn something. I'm going to upload texts about different topics and themes in the book. Enjoy homeschooling and stay healthy Tim
