6. Are Books like 13RW a good way to raise awareness for mental health and for bullying?
Welcome back, today's post will be about the statement: Books like 13RW are a good way to raise awareness for mental health and for bullying. We will discuss this statement and decide whether it's correct or not.
First of all, it's a fact, that the book shows what can happen when especially young people are bullied or worse. We know from experiences at our school, that words can hurt and that they can make the bullied person depressive. "13 Reasons Why" isn't a fantasy story, it deals with real-life problems and the consequences that so few people talk about.
On the other hand, the book doesn't give any advice to a person with these problems, it just shows the problems. It raises awareness for the topic and the society might learn from it but the individual with the problems mentioned before won't find help through it which can cause more problems as we'll see later.
Now, one more argument for the statement. The perspective of a victim can help us understand whats going on in their heads and why they might harm themselves and what we can do to prevent the worst. Furthermore, it could show us that every action has its consequences and that we should pay more attention to our behavior and actions.
The last argument builds upon the series which tells the same story but is, in my opinion, much more dramatic and emotional due to the actors' great performance. Hannah's story might trigger other people with mental health issues to do harm to them as well, that why there is a disclaimer at the beginning of every episode of the series. It may be unlikely but the danger is real and we shouldn't underestimate this argument against the statement above.
As an answer, whether I agree with the statement I'd say: Yes, but no, but yes. It's difficult, but in the end, it's more important to raise awareness for the topic. I think this book and story have changed or will change a lot how we think about bullying and suicide.
