4. Why does Clay receive the tapes?
Hey guys, today I´m back with another great topic, the question, why does Clay receive the tapes?? We´re going to use a quote from the book to answer the question:p.163 II. 21-29 “Clay, honey, your name does not belong on this list. […] You don’t belong in the same way as the others. It’s like that song: ‘One of these things is not like the others. One of these things just doesn’t belong.’ And that’s you, Clay. But you need to be here if I’m going to tell my story. To tell it more completely."
First of all, we already discussed in a previous post, that Clay has a special role among the thirteen people receiving the tapes. She says that Clay doesn´t belong in the same way as the others, which tells us that his influence on her death wasn´t necessarily negative. On the other hand, he´s a very important part of the story because he´s necessary for the story "to tell it more completely". Maybe Clay is the one person, that Hannah would have talked to about her problems, to avoid her suicide. In this case, Clay isn´t one of the thirteen reasons why Hannah committed suicide, he´s more like the one that could have prevented it if Hannah would have opened her up: "One of these things is not like the others.". All in one, we can tell, that Clay is different from the others, because he and Hannah had a special relationship and maybe Hannah just thought he deserved the truth.
Alright, thanks for reading this post, tomorrow I´m going to give you my opinion on the book. Stay tuned.
